Superhero Sensory Room Ideas

Here are a few Superhero ideas to use in your Sensory Room with your sensory learners & explorers.

GOTHAM CITY AMBIENCE – YouTube Video

This video makes a fabulous backdrop projected onto the wall of a Sensory Room—an hour-long video with amazing lights, city sounds and smoking rooftops. Watch out for the Bat-Signal shining into the starry city sky.

SWITCH ACTIVATED BAT SIGNAL

Create a switch adapted Bat-Signal for your Sensory Room.

Cut out a large Bat made from a black card and stick it on the wall.

Plug a bright lamp into your switch box so that it shines over the Bat.

Pug a switch into your switch box

Turn out the lights

And off you go!

SHADOW BOARD SUPERHERO SYMBOLS

Search for pictures of Superhero symbols on the internet. Once you have found the ones you want, print them off, cut them out and stick them onto card.

Cut out the pieces that need to be exposed to light in order to show the features of the symbol (here, I have cut out the eyes). Then laminate.

You will need a Photoluminescent Board. You can buy large sheets of Photoluminescent Board on the Internet or you can buy smaller ones from Amazon.

You will also need a UV/blacklight torch which you can buy from Amazon.

Place the symbol on the board and shine the UV torch over the top then pull the symbol away to see the shadow it has made. Then make the shadow disappear by shining the torch over the shadow.

(Use your Photoluminescent Board in low lighting)

Autumn is a souper sensory time of year leaves; conkers are falling from the trees, the weather is getting colder, the nights are darker, and we look forward to celebrating Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas.

Here are some fantastic cause-and-effect apps themed around this beautiful time of year to use with sensory learners in your settings & at home for learning and fun.

MEBOB SPOOKY

MEBOP SPOOKY is a super, spooky fun app with Halloween themed images and sounds

MY BABY FIREWORKS

FIREWORKS LAB

CAUSE & EFFECT SENSORY SOUND BOX

SENSORY CAUSE & EFFECT SOUND BOX has been around for a long time, but still one of my favourite cause & effect apps.

There are some lovely images & sound choices for Autumn such as Wind Maker, shown in the video.

Touch, tap and drag your finger around the screen to stir up the noisy wind to blow Autumn leaves all around the screen.

Magical Autumn YouTube Videos

Here are two fabulous Autumn videos from YouTube that you can use to create a magical Autumnal environment in your sensory room. Run them via your projector onto a blank wall, a super cheap way to bring the visual wonder of Autumn inside… the perfect backdrops for setting the scene for Autumn sensory sessions.

Glow In The Dark Sensory Art

Add different coloured florescent paint to water beads for a very effective sensory room art activity. This can get messy so make sure you have a plastic sheet down as the water beads bounce everywhere. I dropped the paint-covered water beads on to black paper in a large plastic storage box. The beads make a lovely sound when they hit the bottom & bounce all over the paper.

This would make a great art activity if you were replicating the work of Jackson Pollock.

If your classroom topic was themed around the weather, you could add fluorescent blue paint to your beads, when they hit the paper the beads would pitter-patter like the sound of rain, whilst creating lots of little blue raindrops.

This sensory activity could but adapted to suit any theme with a little imagination…I think the final picture in the video looks like a field of Spring flowers.

MESMERIZING WATER PLAY

GLOW IN THE DARK WATER MADE SIMPLE – If you have a sensory room or similar with a good blacklight, you can create a water play experience with a difference by adding fluorescent paint to your water. A visually fabulous and engaging sensory activity for super special sensory learners of all ages.
