Learners with profound & multiple learning difficulties very often need to be supported to enable them to access the world around them. We need to ensure that our most complex special learners have equal opportunities to play, learn and explore a huge range of sensory materials, presenting them with the same fresh, fun experiences as their peers who may need less support.
The ‘Shiver Me Timbers’ story dough activity can be used with learners of all abilities but has been written primarily with PMLD sensory explorers in mind. I hope that it creates an opportunity for quality one-to-one time and communication between the learner and the person sharing the play experience.
Through the use of hand-over-hand contact & touch, you can assist your learner in experiencing the feel of the playdough, the different shapes & textures and the sensation of different pressures you place on their hands to squash and mould the soft, squidgy dough.
This download includes a link to a ‘Shiver Me Timbers’ PowerPoint, which supports the activity.
Widgit Symbols & Makaton Signs are included with this activity.
