Themed Sensory Sessions

Sensory Soup Themed Sensory Sessions bring a wide range of learning themes to life through sensory experiences. From celebrations and seasonal events to nature, science and the world around us, each session uses carefully chosen sensory resources and activities to make learning accessible through the senses.

Sensory Library resources include clear delivery guidance and a resource list, with accompanying PowerPoint presentations available for newer resources.

Sensory Soup Sensations are themed sensory sessions that awaken each sense individually, giving learners opportunities to explore a wide range of learning themes through sensory experiences.

From Opposites and People Who Help Us to Diwali, The Greenhouse and the Rainforest, each session takes learners through a sequence of sensory activities linked to the theme. Sight, sound, smell, touch and taste are explored individually, with newer sessions also beginning to incorporate vestibular, proprioceptive and interoceptive experiences where appropriate.

Inspired by Flo Longhorn’s Sensology approach to waking the senses, Sensations have developed over time into Sensory Soup’s own themed collection, building on this approach through a wide range of learning themes and sensory experiences.

Each Sensations session includes a teacher guide and resource list, with accompanying PowerPoint presentations available for newer sessions.

Sensory Soup Dance Massage (formerly known as Communication Through Touch) activities bring a rich range of learning themes to life through music, touch and sensory experiences.

The growing collection explores themes ranging from farming, transport and people who help us to travelling around the world, fairy tales and seasonal adventures. Each activity uses specially chosen music alongside simple touch actions and sensory resources to create an imaginative sensory experience linked to the theme.

Touch actions and sensory experiences are carefully connected to what is being explored, giving learners opportunities to experience different rhythms, textures, movements and sensations as the session unfolds.

Dance Massage can be shared individually or as part of a group, offering opportunities for communication, connection and shared interaction through music and touch. Touch and movement can be adapted to suit each learner’s individual responses and preferences.

Every activity includes clear delivery guidance and a resource list, with accompanying PowerPoint presentations available for newer activities.

Sensory Soup Hand & Foot Massage sessions combine music, touch and sensory materials to bring a wide range of themes to life through massage.

Each session uses simple massage movements and carefully chosen sensory materials to represent different elements of the theme. Fingers might become the flames of a rocket during Blast Off, textured materials can represent parts of a sunflower in Follow the Sun, while massaging the feet can represent pulling on walking boots ready to explore in Tropical Trails. Music accompanies each stage, helping to create a shared and engaging sensory experience.

The growing collection explores a wide range of themes, with sessions designed to be easy to deliver and adaptable to the individual needs and responses of each learner.

Each session includes a teacher guide and resource list, with accompanying PowerPoint presentations available for newer sessions.

Sensory Soup Music & Movement is a growing collection of fun, themed sessions created to give wheelchair users opportunities to experience and explore different movements through music and dance.

The wheelchair dance sessions use music, imaginative themes and supported movement to create enjoyable shared dance experiences. Learners might move slowly like a sloth through the rainforest, sneak around like a mischievous leprechaun, or travel back in time and explore different styles of movement inspired by music from different eras and genres.

Each dance encourages learners to experience movement in different ways, with dance partners supporting and adapting movements to suit the individual learner.

The collection has grown from the original music and movement activities to include more structured wheelchair dance sessions, with Sensory PE sessions also beginning to be added.

Each wheelchair dance includes a teacher guide and an accompanying video, which can be viewed on YouTube or downloaded directly from Sensory Soup via OneDrive

Sensory Soup Sensory Room resources are multisensory experiences designed to transform sensory rooms and darkened spaces into immersive sensory worlds.

Head Under the Stars for a camping experience where learners can watch the stars, toast marshmallows and sing campfire songs around a homemade sensory bonfire. Dive into the dark ocean to encounter glowing fish and a shark, or experience the magic of The Blue Hour beneath twinkling stars.

The darkness is what brings these experiences to life. No specialist sensory-room equipment is required, the sessions can be created in a darkened classroom or other suitable space using simple, accessible sensory resources.

Each session includes clear guidance and a resource list, with supporting PowerPoint presentations and videos to help bring the sensory experience to life.
